the beginning
Hello everyone, and welcome. If you've decided to follow along with me on this project, I am extremely grateful. Thank you for taking the time out of your day to read these stories, as I know some of you didn't even know my dad.
The idea to begin this project struck me months ago, at a hotel bar. My mom was in Austin, and we were discussing life over whiskey and vodka variations. About two drinks in, the conversation took a pretty serious turn and we began discussing the moment she and my dad found out he had lung cancer. I will never forget the way she told that story, with such detail and emotion; it was as if I was right there in that moment with her. And the craziest part about it? I was there in that moment, I was just too young to remember. I couldn't believe that I was present for such an important moment in my family's life, yet I have no recollection of it.
That night got me thinking: how do I not know more of these stories? How have I gone 22 years without really knowing anything more than the basics of my father's life and his struggle with cancer? After that night, at that tiny, empty hotel bar, I decided to discover these things for myself. I am at a pivotal point in my own life - about to graduate from The University of Texas and begin my own journey - and I'm becoming more and more curious as to where I came from. His story will not only give me some peace of mind, but it'll also provide me the clarity that I've been missing in my own life since he passed.
This blog will serve as a stepping stone for the chapters of a memoir, title to-be-decided. I've never written a book, and I don't know exactly what I want it to say. But that will all come with time. For now, I plan to gather as many stories, anecdotes and items as I can from my dad's friends, family and colleagues in my pursuit to learn about the man who made me.
